I’ve known the name quickly, quickly for a long time through their 2016 lofi track Getsomrest/sleepwell, which was very popular in the early days of “lofi hip hop to relax/study to” radios. This was a time when the genre still focused on its hip-hop roots and heavily relied on unauthorized sampling of beats, melodies, and sound bites. The genre has since become extremely safe and generic, but I digress.
Last weekend, I noticed quickly, quickly’s name on a poster for Amsterdam’s London Calling festival, being held 15-16 May 2026. I was surprised to see that name after all these years, which led me to check out their latest album, I Heard That Noise.
The best way I can describe this album is that it sounds like violently traversing a multiverse to find pockets of comforting music and song. Each song on the album transitions to the next with a burst of static. Soothing melodies and soft vocals are interrupted by a psychedelic noise that forcefully transports you to the next track– sometimes gracefully (e.g., the soothing interlude Beginning Band Day One), other times with a whiplash (the intro to This House).
The staticky, electronic sounds sometimes remind me of Porter Robinson’s Nurture album. Yet the vocals are much softer, reminding me of late-2000s/early-2010s bands. For some reason, Radical Face’s Welcome Home, Son comes to mind, as does HONNE’s 2020 album no song without you.
Favorite tracks:
- This House (Track 4): a calm, introspective song with a soothing melody.
- Beginning Band Day One (Track 7): an ethereal interlude that reminds me of Jay Som’s Lipstick Stains
